Human Services - Trauma, Resilience, and Self-Care Strategies

The M.A. in Human Services with emphasis in Trauma, Resilience, and Self-Care Strategies from Concordia University, St. Paul is designed for human services practitioners who wish to become more effective when serving communities and individuals experiencing trauma or toxic stress exposure. The two-year, 36-credit Master of Arts in Human Services online program prepares learners with sought-after skills in fostering self-care, mindfulness strategies, sleep improvement strategies, crisis intervention practices, and more.

Curriculum Overview


The Human Services Master’s in Trauma, Resilience, and Self-Care Strategies features a relevant and practical curriculum and is approved by the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board for credit towards peace officer licensure. Each class is taught by two professors from different human services fields to ensure a unique, multidisciplinary perspective. Students can also build their resumes and careers with publication in Concordia University, St. Paul’s Forensic Scholars Today.

Along with human services coursework, the 36 credit hours include the following trauma-focused classes:

  • HSV 543 Foundations in Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders – 3 credits
  • HSV 548 Neurobiology of Trauma and its Impact on the Developing Brain – 3 credits
  • HSV 561 Forensic Behavioral Health Aspects of Trauma – 3 credits
  • HSV 567 Trauma and its Impact on the Family System – 3 credits
  • HSV 578 Trauma Informed Practice, Self-Care, and Resilience Strategies for the Human Service and Teleconsultation Care Professional – 3 credits

      • Describe your employment history and why you are choosing to pursue a graduate degree at this time in your career.
      • Describe a personal and/or professional goal that you hope you will fulfill through earning your graduate degree.
      • Describe a past or present personal/professional experience that you believe positively influenced your potential to succeed in a graduate program.
