Earning an MBA is one of the most effective ways to get ahead in today’s fast-paced business world. But all online business degrees are not created equal. For Will, finding a values-driven MBA was important, and Concordia University, St. Paul’s program had the community-based learning he was looking for.
“I wanted a program that was focused on being ethically grounded. A lot of programs are more about the nuts and bolts of business and don’t [take] a step back to look at what it is that you’re doing, why you’re doing it and how,” he explained. And as a marketing professional, Will knew he wanted to pursue an online degree that would fit his busy schedule, so the flexibility of Concordia’s online program appealed to him.
Will plans to graduate from his online MBA program in August 2016. He works as a marketing database analyst for Patterson Companies Incorporated, a corporate partner of CSP’s. He heard about CSP through a family member who graduated from one of the many undergraduate degree programs. “When I looked into it, it seemed like a good fit in terms of the online delivery, and the pricing of the program was very competitive. Those were the main determining factors that led me to choose Concordia over some of the others in the area,” he said.
Once he began MBA coursework, Will knew he had chosen the right program. “It’s been a really enlightening experience. The teachers and members of my cohort have been great. We’ve all sort of helped each other out along the way and it’s been very enriching to be able to learn the things I’ve been learning,” he said.
He found that he could apply what he learned right away on the job, thanks to learning from professors with real-world experience. “Along the way, I’ve found a mentor that is actually one of my former instructors. He’s able to give me direction and additional information when I need it,” Will explained.
In terms of coursework, Will found that CSP’s emphasis on organizational leadership and applied business ethics was particularly valuable. “They provide a baseline for how business should be conducted, and how you should rethink your mindset to be about more than profit and things like that,” he said.
As he continued in the program, Will also felt CSP’s blend of business principles and values was important. “You go from learning some of the core foundational morals and values into business aspects like marketing, research and economics. The classes are laid out in a way that makes sense,” he continued.
Pursuing his MBA at CSP has even inspired Will to pursue a new business idea. “During my program I’ve started the process of launching a new business, a brewing cooperative which we hope to have somewhere in the Twin Cities area,” he explained.
The online format has enabled him to balance work, family and study commitments and make his dream a reality. “It’s been a really exciting couple of years,” he said.
