Bobbi Lambrecht Scholarship Recipient Jerome Edwards

Concordia University, St. Paul recently awarded three incoming students a $5,000 scholarship. The awards were given in honor of best-selling author Cheryl Strayed’s mother, Bobbi Lambrecht. Bobbi returned to college to obtain her bachelor’s degree at age 40, making her a great example of CSP’s commitment to education at any age.  Inspired by Cheryl’s speaking event at CSP, the scholarship is part of our commitment to offering students like you an affordable, achievable education.

More than 50 people applied for the scholarship. Recipients were chosen based on their application materials, an essay about why continuing their education was important, and an interview with the scholarship committee. Here is one winner’s story.

Jerome Edwards is a strength and fitness coach in Georgia. After experiencing significant benefits from getting fit, he wants to earn an online exercise science degree at CSP because he is passionate about seeing other people enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The following is Jerome’s winning scholarship application essay:

Dream It, Chase It

by Jerome Edwards

My high school counselor did not tell me to follow my passion. I was asked, “What do you want to do for the rest of your life?” I only knew I wanted to make money and I had to go to college. My love for music led me to Morris Brown College, where I earned a bachelor’s degree. The experience helped me realize that I had the resolve to finish school and that music was not what I was called to do. Twenty years later and with a family to support, I’m pursuing an exercise science degree. This degree will open doors and show my clientele that I care enough to continue my education.

About ten years ago, my father had a heart attack. My mom had already been diagnosed as type two diabetic. I knew what was in store if I did not change. I started working with a trainer who introduced me to high intensity training. After seeing results, I decided to become a trainer. In 2006, I became certified through the International Sports Sciences Association, and in 2008 I became a CrossFit Certified Trainer. I had logged many coaching hours using a similar methodology and found that functional training was what my clientele needed.

My pivotal moment was when an elderly female client said, “I want be able to get out of my chair without holding on to something for help.” We trained for a year before she left to have knee replacement surgery. Months later she returned and performed a proper squat with no assistance. I LOVE THAT!

The fitness industry gave me a purpose that drives me to seek more knowledge. During my eight years in the fitness industry, I fell in love with the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. In 2013, I became a certified USA Weightlifting Coach. It is my goal to become a master’s level athlete in CrossFit and with USA Weightlifting, and to show other late-blooming athletes that it is never too late to chase your dreams and thrive.

There is also a special place in my heart for the education of children. While I was not called to be a teacher in the traditional sense, I believe that strength and conditioning is my voice. I imagine the possibilities had I been introduced to my inner athlete when I was younger. I want that for the youth of today. It is my goal to start a nonprofit training program that will expose youths to the health benefits of strength and conditioning, as well as to the professional opportunities available. Children should recognize their athletic potential sooner rather than later, and be able to grow in a safe and nurturing environment with sound instruction. It is a privilege to help people the way that I do. Everyone wants to live a long, healthy life. I believe it can be achieved through fitness.
