Family Science

The Master of Arts in Family Science prepares professionals to work with societal issues influencing the family, including: economics, education, work-family issues, parenting, sexuality and gender.

Our approach to societal problems - such as substance abuse, domestic violence, unemployment, debt and child abuse - can be more effectively addressed from a perspective that considers the individual and family as part of larger systems.

Curriculum Overview

Overview

Family Science focuses on healthy family functioning within a family-systems perspective, and provides a primarily preventive approach. The skills and knowledge needed for healthy functioning are widely known: strong communication skills, knowledge of typical human development, good decision-making skills, positive self-esteem, and healthy interpersonal relationships.

Students complete coursework to prepare for helping roles that focus on maintaining healthy families. The Master’s in Family Science degree program includes courses on parenting, family systems, child growth and development, family communication and relationships.

Concordia University’s online M.A. in Family Science program is approved by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). Graduates earn the international designation of Certified Family Life Educator. Students can choose between a certified or non-certified track, but must do so before the third course in the Family Science degree program. Graduates of the certified track earn the designation of Certified Family Life Educator*.

*Students receiving the CFLE designation will not be required to sit for certifying exam as the program coursework is endorsed by the National Council of Family Relations meeting all criteria without an exam.
